NEWS RELEASE: 30 OCTOBER 2013

APR VOLKSWAGEN RACING CUP CHAMPION SET TO WIN INTERNATIONAL RACE OUTING

A fully funded drive in the fantastic Scirocco-R Cup is again being offered to the winner of the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup. Next year’s series victor will follow in the wheeltracks of 2012 and ’13 champions James Walker and Aaron Mason in gaining the chance to pit their skills against international competition in Volkswagen’s top-flight European race series.

Mason is just returned from Hockenheim in Germany, where he diced with touring car legends Frank Biela and Laurent Aiello in the final round of this year’s Scirocco-R Cup – his reward for taking the 2013 APR Volkswagen Racing Cup champion’s crown.

“It was a great experience,” said Aaron. “I was chuffed just to have been racing with people with that sort of talent and I’d love to go back and have another go, so it looks like I will have to come back to defend my VW Cup title.”

News of the prize drive comes as the championship reveals its provisional calendar for the coming season. Once again, Britain’s best-supported one-make series will feature alongside the British GT and British F3 Championships, with seven double-header dates including a third consecutive visit to the fabulous Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.

“We are very pleased to be able to announce another superb set of race dates and also the mouth-watering Scirocco-R Cup prize drive,” said Volkswagen Racing UK Technical Director Matt Walker. “It is a great calendar, with races on almost all of the best circuits in Britain and also a return to Spa-Francorchamps, which is a highlight for teams, for the third year.”

Volkswagen Racing UK plans to keep revisions to the technical regulations to a minimum for the coming season. “Stability of regulations is key to the success of the championship, along with good organisation and strong policing,” added Walker. “That is why we have averaged 27 cars on the grid this season.”

The championship will return to action on Easter Monday, 21 April, at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire.

Further backing for the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup comes from ECM, CEVA, Hankook, Paragon and Prestige Performance Centre.
